Why Poor Jinx & The Silent Crickets?
My late pet gecko, Mr Jinx, known as a Leopard Gecko (scientific name eublepharis macularius) as a species inhabited many parts of South Asia in countries from Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nepal. Geographiclly, this part of the world covered a vast range of wild habitats from arid desert, humid scrublands and cooler, mountainous Himalayan foothills. When I was designing his large enclosure, I merged together different wild like climate zones allowing the lizard to move between warm and cool areas to help regulate his body temperature. I put together a lighting setup that transitioned through different shades from dawn til dusk that helped my gecko to synchronise his own circadian rhythm.
This environment inspired the theme for what began as posting videos of the setup on my Instagram account, tagging music tracks that went with the theme. Then this led me to start putting together a playlist on Spotify, which also linked in with my world travels in my late teens and early 20s. The playlist kept growing and growing turning into a worldly soundscape weaving in and out of different moods and places. This was the start of me curating themed sets, initially using Spotify as a platform to 'display' the music, before transitioning to producing my own electronic music and curating DJ mixes using digital media.
